Research interests:  the interactions between indigenous communities and the ecology of the rainforest of eastern Peru, especially along the Urubamba and Ucayali rivers, and in western Brazil.  My work in the Peruvian rainforest began with an accidental confrontation in 1985 with the displacement of the Nahua from the headwaters of the Mishagua and Manu rivers due to the encroachment of lumbermen and Shell seismologists.  After writing reports on this for Survival International and others, my interest turned to the cultural survival of native groups generally, and to a study of shamanism.  I also did research on the historical and prehistorical influences of Amazonian myth, cosmology, and motifs upon coastal and Andean Peruvian civilizations.  Latterly I have worked on the human ecology of different social groups in the Amazon, on the sustainable modes of interaction between native groups and the rainforest ecology, and on the lessons to be learned from the latter by others.  Most recently I spent five months in the frontier region of western Amazonas, Brazil, on the rivers Javari and Curacao.
